Nashville –  The end came quicker than expected for Fairgrounds Speedway.
Track operator Danny Denson Wednesday decided to cancel the scheduled season-ending All-American 400. The race had originally been set for last weekend but was postponed due to a rainy forecast and rescheduled for the end of the month.
Denson reconsidered and decided [...]

Woody: McMurray Counterjabs Chase-Bashers

Jamie McMurray proved the Chase-bashers wrong.
They said drivers who didn’t make the Chase would have no incentive during the last 10 races.
Well, McMurray seemed to have plenty of incentive last Sunday when he blazed his way to victory at Talladega.
They anti-Chase crowd whined that the non-Chase drivers would be ignored [...]

Woody: Don’t Tamper With Talla’

I remember a time when drivers had trouble sleeping the night before Talladega.
Now they have trouble staying awake during the race.
At one point during last Sunday’s race – using the term loosely – Tony Stewart radioed his crew that he was having a problem keeping his eyes open.
Trust me Tony, you [...]

Nashville – Dover Motorsports’ surprise announcement on Friday that it is closing Memphis Motorsports Park was bittersweet news for Cliff Hawks.
Hawks is VP/GM of Nashville Superspeedway  – another Dover facility – which will inherit the 2010 NASCAR truck race that had been scheduled at Memphis. While the Nashville track can use [...]

Woody: Monaco Vs. ‘Dega – Viva La Difference

Earlier this year my RacinToday.com cohort Jonathan Ingram reminisced about his first visit to Monaco for the Grand Prix. Allow me to wax similarly nostalgic about my first trip to one of my favorite venues:
Talladega. White-knuckle, breath-taking Talladega down in sweet-home Alabama.
The asphalt had barely cooled on the mammoth track – [...]

Racing History Takes A Beating In Nashville

Nashville – She was once fast and frisky and known throughout the nation for her wild Saturday nights, but now she’s faded, forlorn and almost forgotten.
After this weekend all that’ll be left are the memories.
Historic Fairgrounds Speedway is closing its gates, ending a 51-year-run as one of the most fabled short [...]

Woody: Are Non-Chasers Non-Racers?

Critics of the Chase for the Championship claim that drivers who don’t make the 12-man playoff become ride-around clock-watchers with no incentive in the final 10 races.
Oh really?
How about pride?
How about a little self-respect?
How about showing some grit and professionalism?
How about trying to get your sponsor some publicity the old-fashioned way [...]

Woody: It’s Do It Or Lose It Time

It’s soul-search, gut-check, look-in-the-mirror time for at least eight of the 12 drivers in the Chase for the Championship Sunday at Martinsville.
If they don’t make a move – and I mean a MAJOR move – they can kick it in cruise control and just go through the motions the rest of the way. They’re out. [...]

Woody: Skimpy First Class Hurts The New Hall

If it was chatter that the NASCAR Hall of Fame folks wanted, it was chatter they got.
And – just as I predicted – much of it’s not good.
By limiting the first HOF class to five inductees – FIVE, to represent 62 years of racing! – they created a lot of bruised feelings and peeved fans.
It [...]

Woody: The Great Chase Seems To Be Fading Fast

Going into this 6th edition of NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship, I thought the 12-pack of drivers represented the strongest field ever.
I thought the stage was set for the most wham-bam title fight in NASCAR history.
I thought we’d see goose-bump battles and constant shuffling of the standings.
Looks like I thought wrong.
We’re five races into the [...]
