Woody: Flood Puts Problems Into Perspective

Nashville, Tenn. – It was a hectic weekend. I was trying to arrange an interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. for a fast-approaching magazine deadline, the air conditioner was making an odd (i.e., expensive-sounding) noise and the guy who works on my car (Mr. Good Wallet) said I needed at least four new tires.
My lawn mower [...]

Woody: Queen Lynda Is A Racing Heroine

NASCAR has had lots of heroes over the years. It has also had lots of heroines – we just don’t hear as much about them. They’re silent and unseen for the most part.
Another word for racing’s heroines is “wives.”
None is more respected and admired than Lynda Petty, Richard Petty’s bride of [...]

Woody: Frances Knew Value Of Media

Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr. shared more than a vision about stock car racing. Visions are a dime a dozen, or nowadays a dollar after inflation.
More practically, they shared a knack for knowing how to turn their vision into reality and a big part of that knack involved [...]

Woody: ‘Anonymous Sources’ Can Spell Trouble

Kevin Harvick touched on one of the most tickling questions in journalism last week when he took the media to task for using an anonymous source in a story about a reputed team rift.
The story quoted an unnamed source as saying “Kevin has burned all his bridges” at Richard Childress Racing.
Harvick [...]

Woody: Kahne Puts Petty In Bind

Let’s see if I’ve got this straight:
If Kasey Kahne has to choose between driving for Richard Petty Motorsports or nobody next season, he’ll choose nobody?
That’s what Kasey said when he announced plans to leave RPM at the end of this season: he doesn’t know where he’ll be next season.
Of course [...]

Woody: A Snit At Hendrick? ‘Bout Time

If there really are some ill feeling festering between teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, all I can say is:
‘Bout time.
I think the buddy-buddy nonsense among teammates has gone far enough. If fact, it went way too far last season when Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson swapped charity points in a [...]

Woody: Kahne Fast Off Track Too

There’s something odd about this week’s announcement that Kasey Kahne is leaving Richard Petty Motorsports to drive for Hendrick Motorsports.
Kasey can’t get in a Hendrick car until the 2012 season. Hendrick has four drivers signed through 2011, and four is the max permitted by NASCAR.
Since Kahne can’t join Hendrick until [...]

Woody: Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One

We’ve been saying it for the past three years:
Surely Jimmie Johnson can’t win ANOTHER championship.
And for the past three years we’ve been wrong.
I didn’t say it at the start of this season – three strikeouts is enough to button most any sportswriter’s mouth – but deep down I admit I thought [...]

Woody: Is Texting Worse Than Having A Monkey In Car?

The Feds are considering using NASCAR drivers in a “distracted driver” campaign, intended to warn motorists about the dangers of texting or talking on cell phones while behind the wheel.
I suppose it’s fitting, because race drivers have a pretty good record when it comes to driving while distracted.
Nobody was more [...]

Woody: No ‘Quiet Please” Signs In NASCAR

During the final round of the Masters Sunday, some golfer (don’t ask me who; they all look alike to me) was in the midst of thinking about perhaps hitting his ball after meditating over it for what seemed like ten minutes when a theater usher in a fancy blazer hissed at [...]
