USAC National Midget Tour regular Tanner Thorson joined the ranks of dirt track racing’s elite Saturday night with a workmanlike victory in the A-Feature of the 36th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway.
Thorson became the 22nd driver to hoist a Golden Driller trophy, symbolic of winning “The Super Bowl of Midget Racing,” after overtaking three-time event champion Christopher Bell. Thorson took the lead from Bell _ who paced the first 36 laps _ on Lap 37 of 55 around TER’s quarter-mile clay oval en route to a margin of victory of 0.688-seconds.
“I knew I had to step it up from Thursday night,” said Thorson, driver of the Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports No. 19t. “Bell was obviously better than me, and I knew they were going to bring the same car if not better. It helped having Kasey (Kahne) there running another car that was set up nearly identical. It brought a lot to my attention and the car ended up feeling pretty good.”
Traffic played into the mix on Lap 36, when Justin Grant biked the cushion and tipped the No. 2J over in Turn 2. Stalking Bell’s iRacing No. 71w, Thorson took the lead on Lap 37 via a slide job off Turn 4. As the pair sliced through traffic, Bell momentarily retook the point through Turns 1 and 2 with six laps to run.
Bell _ the Chili Bowl Nats champ in 2017, 2018 and 2019 _continued to attack before contact with the wall let Thorson increase his advantage. Nearly dropping to third in the process, Bell regrouped and regained ground. But Bell, the crowd favorite from Norman, Okla., ran out of laps as Thorson crossed with an 0.688-second advantage.
“When they said how many laps were down, it was just like Turkey Night where I had to break Bell’s momentum a little bit,” said Thorson, the 2016 USAC National Midget Champion. “If not, it was going to be hard to beat him, so I just had to get going. Buddy (Kofoid) was there and he was pressing me a little bit, but my car actually seemed to get better throughout the run and I used what I learned off Thursday night.”
Bell, a NASCAR Cup Series regular with Joe Gibbs Racing, took the lead from Thorson on Lap 27 of Thursday night’s preliminary 30-lap A-Feature and finished 0.380-seconds in front of the 25-year-old native of Minden, Nev., now living in Broken Arrow, Okla.
Bell, who cut his dirt track racing teeth on the bull rings of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, finished ahead of two-time Golden Driller winner Rico Abreu Saturday night. Kofoid crossed fourth with Tanner Carrick fifth in his first A-Feature appearance.
Kyle Larson _ Chili Bowl champ in 2020-21 and the reigning NASCAR Cup champion with Hendrick Motorsports _ placed sixth and was followed by C.J. Leary from 16th. Kevin Thomas Jr. crossed eighth, followed by Cup regular Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of JTG Daugherty Racing and Thomas Meseraull to complete the top-10.
The 2022 Chili Bowl Nationals drew-in a record 381 drivers over six nights of racing. The Saturday run of events was slated to begin with double Q-Features, but drivers scratching put the first events at double P-Features. Including four rounds of the Pole Shuffle won by Bell, there were 35 races run Saturday. The World Wide Technology Raceway Flip Count increased to 66, with all drivers able to walk away.
Saturday’s most noteworthy run through “The Alphabet Soup” was completed by dirt track icon Sammy Swindell, winner of a record five Golden Driller Awards between 1989 and 2009. Swindell, 66, advanced through six rounds before damage to his No.1 entry sidelined him during the first I-Feature.
The 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire is scheduled for Jan. 9-14, 2023, at the Tulsa Expo Raceway located inside the SageNet Center in Oklahoma. Ticket renewals and new orders will begin on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. More information on prices will be posted soon.
