Former NASCAR driver J.J. Yeley reportedly suffered three broken vertebrae during a crash at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. on Saturday night.
Yeley was competing in a race in the Sprint Bandits Series at the half-mile dirt Lakeside track when he was involved in a wreck early in the feature event.
Yeley’s car flipped in Turn 1, said Lakeside owner Marc Olson. The flip did not look severe but Yeley complained about neck pain.
Yeley was transported to a local hospital late Saturday night.
From there, he was transported back to North Carolina.
Yeley’s flip was the third of the feature. Another former NASCAR driver, Bryan Clauson, was involved in the second flip but was uninjured.
Clauson returned and salvaged 12th-place finish.
Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon won the event, the $10,000-to-win Ron Shuman Classic and in doing so won the Fifth Annual Sprint Bandits Tour ‘N Topless championship in the process.
Yeley, a native of Phoenix, made 95 starts in the Sprint Cup series from 2004-2009. He also made 118 Nationwide Series starts and six in the Camping World Truck Series.
Among teams he drover for in NASCAR was Joe Gibbs Racing.

Terrible news. We got to meet J.J. here in Texas and were very impressed with his maturity and driving skills at TMS. It seemed as though it was just a matter of time before he got a break and found a full time ride. Our thoughts and prayers going up for a swift, complete recovery.
