Mark Martin turned a lap at 124.484 mph Friday afternoon to win the pole for Saturday night’s Sharpie 500 Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The pole was the fifth of the season for Martin and comes at a great time as he is fighting to secure a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, which is now just three races away.

Martin will start the race on Saturday 12th in points and on the bubble for the 12-driver, 10 race Chase.

Greg Biffle was second fastest in qualifying and Scott Speed was third, which is his second best qualifying effort of the season.

Dave Blaney was fourth fastest while Matt Kenseth was fifth.

Brian Vickers, the winner of last week’s race at Michigan and the driver who is 13th in points and just 12 behind Martin, was 14th fastest at Bristol Friday.

Clint Bowyer, 14th in points and 58 behind Martin, was sixth fastest in qualifying.
