Stewart Rolls To Third Victory Of Season
Tony Stewart held off Marcos Ambrose and an shrinking fuel supply to win Monday’s rain-delayed Heluva Good! Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International.
Carls Edwards finished third.
Kyle Busch was fourth.
Stewart, the series points leader, will be able to clinch a berth in the Chase with a good run next weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
The victory was the seventh for Stewart on a road course and his fifth at The Glen.
The victory was his third of the season. His finish might have been a DNF had the race been a lap longer.
Asked how close his driver was to running out of fuel on the final lap, Stewart’s crew chief, Darian Grubb said, “We were very close. He probably doesn’t have enough for a burn out or anything right here.”
Ambrose’s runner-up finish was his best in a Cup car. Last year, he was third at the Glen.
He, too, was battling fuel-supply problems but battling for the victory he was, too.
“I’m whipped,” Ambrose, who won Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at The Glen, said.
Stewart’s point lead over second-place Jimmie Johnson, who was 12th on Monday, is 260 points with four races to go until the start of the Chase.
Jeff Gordon will head to Michigan 342 points back of Stewart after being involved in a horrific wreck and finishing 37th.
