Peugeot put an end to Audi’s eight-year run as kings of sports car racing by winning at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday.

The French car-maker sent the hundreds of thousands of fans into a frenzy by finishing first and second in the LMP1 class in the 77th running of the world’s greatest and most important sports car race.

The victory was the first at Le Mans for Peugeot in 16 years.

David Brabham was a member of the winning driving team this year. When Peugeot last won at Le Mans, in 1993, his brother, Geoff Brabham, was driving the winner.

Also driving the winning car were Marc Gene, who was behind the wheel at the end of the race, and Alexander Wurz.

In second place was the Peugeot driven by the all-French-driver team of Sebastien Bourdais, Franck Montagny and Stephane Sarrazin.

The third Peugeot factory team, piloted by Nicolas Minassian, Christian Klien and Pedro Lamy, finshed sixth. It was involved in a pit-road wreck early in the race.

Audi was not completely shut out as one of its R 15 TDIs finished third.

The 2009 edition of Le Mans was not totally a European party as Corvette placed first in the GT1 class.

And a tidy victory it was as the winning American team pulled its battle-scarred car into the paddock with just minutes to go in the race in order to give the car a quick scrubbing before sending it to the checkered flag.

The Corvette will step away from GT1 this year but it will do so with a sixth class victory at Le Mans on the resume.
