Castroneves Climbs To Victory at Texas
Helio Castroneves’ freedom tour continued on Saturday night when he won the Bombardier Learjet 550k at Texas Motor Speedway.
Castroneves pulled away from Penske Racing teammate Ryan Briscoe over the final laps to get the victory.
“Pedal to the metal, drive it like I stole it,” Castroneves said.
It was his second victory in the last three races as he won three weeks ago in the Indianapolis 500.
Scott Dixon finished third and Marco Andretti made a final-turn pass to take fourth place away from Dario Franchitti.
Danica Patrick finished sixth.
The victory allowed Castroneves to climb the fences at Texas for a third time. The third victory ties him with Sam Hornish Jr. for most victories at the 1.5-mile quad-oval.
It continued a wonderful run of luck over the past couple months – a run which started when Castroneves was acquitted of tax-evasion charges in Miami just prior to the race in Long Beach in April.
Briscoe dominated much of the race, piling up huge leads.
But Castroneves took the lead during pit stops with 175 laps to go. He stayed in front of a pack of about eight cars over the final 50 or so laps. He and Briscoe put some space between them and the field over the final 10 laps.
Castroneves’ margin of victory was .39 seconds.
“I just didn’t have enough for Helio over the final stages,” Briscoe said.No Comment
