MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Denny Hamlin led twice for 48 laps in Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 en route to a third-place finish, but the day didn’t begin as well as it ended for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Hamlin was using his golf cart for travel to-and-from an appearance before the race when a vehicle pulling the stage used for driver introductions ran over it.

“I saw it coming, jumped out of the cart,” Hamlin said. “The other guys stayed on and were going to take a ride. It cleaned us out pretty good.”

Hamlin said it was the tractor that pulled the stage that ran over his golf cart.

“Ever seen, like, Big Foot, and those cars they set up for him to jump over?” Hamlin asked. “We were the car.”

Hamlin then smiled and noted Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell would receive a bill for the golf cart.
