Carl Edwards won the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Friday.

The driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota won the pole for the race – which is the second of the 10-race Chase playoffs – with a lap at 28.119 seconds around the NHMS mile.

The pole was the sixth of the season for Edwards and the 22nd of his career.

“This is a really fun place to drive when your car is that good,” said Edwards, who will look to rebound from a 15th-place finish last week in the first race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship last week at Chicagoland Speedway. “This is what we needed. We didn’t run well at Chicago, so hopefully we can turn this into a good race. The car is built for speed and we’ve had the speed in qualifying, but we have to turn it into a great race here.”

Edwards took the pole in both races at NHMS in 2015, but finished seventh in July and fifth in September.

Martin Truex Jr. qualified second and non-Chaser Ryan Newman third.

Truex won last weekend’s Chase-opener and has secured a berth in the next round of the playoffs.

“Our goals are the same as they were last week,” said Truex Jr. “We have a shot at winning. I have a lot of motivation here at New Hampshire because we have never won here.  But we have been close before. I feel good now and I really want to win it.”
