Jason Johnson held off Donny Schatz to win Knoxville on Saturday night.

Jason Johnson won Saturday night’s 56th running of the Knoxville Nationals sprint car race in Knoxville, Iowa.

In getting the victory, Johnson deprived Donny Schatz of his 10th championship at America’s premier event for sprint cars.
“I gave it my all,” Johnson, a native of Louisiana, said. “I wanted to win just as bad as Donny wanted to win, just as bad as Shane (Stewart) wanted to win – and probably everybody that started in A-Main. My guys gave me a great race car and I got very fortunate.”

The 40-year-old Johnson took the lead in lap 27 and for the rest of the night had to fight off Schatz to get the win.

“I know he wasn’t happy with me for crowding him but I wanted to win,” Johnson said.

Schatz finished second and Stewart was third.

With his second-place finish, Schatz remains three Knoxville victories behind Steve Kinser’s dozen.

“Once he got up there, I tried everything to catch him and couldn’t do it,” Schatz, who was attempting to win his sixth-straight Nationals championship, said.

Johnson was asked if he was going to start thinking about a repeat in 2017.

“Hell no,” Johnson said. “We’re going to have a party.”
