Erik Jones passed Ty Dillon for the lead with 15 laps remaining and then went on to an easy victory in the Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday evening.

Xfinity SeriesThe victory was the third of the season for Jones and it came in a race which he led 154 of 250 laps.

“It’s a great day,” the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said. “We had a great car. One that definitely deserved to win the race. The fastest car I feel like won tonight, which is always a good feeling. It was an awesome day for us.”

Jones qualified second but passed teammate pole-sitter Daniel Suarez on the first lap.

Dillon, who finished second – over 3.5 seconds behind Jones – has not won in over two years. He said Saturday’s result “stings”.

“I want the win so bad,” said Dillon, who has not won in 66 races. “That was all I had. They (Joe Gibbs Racing) are good right now. That was all I had.

“I’m proud of my guys. They gave us a great opportunity tonight. My heart’s been broken every race since Indy (where he last won in 2014). I want to get in victory lane again. We’re close. We just have to get a little better.”

The caution flag waved six times in the race.

Jones was asked if he was close to running out of fuel at the end of the race.

“I don’t think we were too close,” he said. “I don’t know how many more we could have gone, but we definitely had enough – fuel pressure wasn’t starting to move at all and I was saving for the last 10 or so just to make sure we were on the side of it that we needed to be, but I felt good about it. Chris (Gabehart, crew chief) felt good about it, but thanks to these guys. It’s just a great race car we’ve prepared. I feel like we deserve to win here when we came here earlier this year – we had a really fast car – and nice to kind of get some redemption for that one.”
