Teen-ager William Byron led 44 of 60 laps at Pocono Raceway in the No. 9 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota and won for the fifth time in 12 Camping World Truck Series starts this year.

He broke Kurt Busch’s rookie record of four wins in Truck Series in 2000 and he left runner-up Cameron Haley searching for answers.

Asked about his five wins and whether or not the feat surprises him, Byron said, “I’d have said you were crazy. Just to get one is hard enough. Everything has just lined up for us this year. I’ve been extremely blessed and we’ve had a lot of things that have happened good for us and we’re bringing fast trucks and we’re doing our homework so that’s the biggest thing and the key to success.”

Haley said he won’t be surprise if there are more wins ahead for Byron and his team.

“That 9 is so fast,” commented Haley. “We need to really go back and look at things, because he’s definitely a step above us. But we worked hard all day, and we were able to come out at least for a second-place finish.

“We would have liked to win, but that 9 is pretty fast, so we’ll keep trying.”

The 18-year-0ld Byron, who started from the pole, said getting the win and the record felt great.

“It means a lot,” Byron said. “It was definitely a goal—I can’t lie about that. I knew that was something to beat, and we just show up with so much focus.

“We never get off track, I feel like. It’s just a credit to where we are as a race team, the work we’re doing, the work they’re doing in the shop on the trucks, and we’re putting it all together when we get to the race track.”

The race featured nine cautions for 27 laps.
