Simon Pagenaud earned his first IndyCar Series victory in a Team Penske car on Sunday, the fifth of his career, but it didn’t come without controversy.

The French driver captured the victory in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach 1.968-mile street circuit by the narrowest margin in the historic event’s history but defending series champion Scott Dixon and his Chip Ganassi Racing team clearly thought he was handed that victory by race stewards.

Replays appeared to show that Pagenaud violated blend line rules as he came out of the pits after his final stop. Stewards reviewed that video, agreed that Pagenaud did cut across the blend line and re-entered the race just a car length ahead of Dixon.

But the Stewards let Pagenaud off with a warning and his lead over Dixon and subsequent victory, stood. The margin of victory was 0.3032 seconds.

The race went caution free.

Pagenaud’s teammate, pole-sitter Helio Castroneves, finished third. Penke driver Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth.
