Regan Smith bumped leader Alex Tagliani out of the way on the second to last turn of the final lap and from there went on to win the XFINITY Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Saturday.

The win was the first in 52 races for Smith, who drives the No. 7 Chevrolet of JR Motorsports.

It came a week after his chance to win at Watkins Glen International’s road course was scuttled when he was rammed by Ty Dillon – a ramming that led to Smith physically attacking Dillon in the pits after the race.

“I hate to do that in the last corner but it’s been about a year and eight months since I last, it’s been a long time. I wasn’t going to pass that opportunity up,” Smith said. “I’ve been wrecked so many times on these road courses that I had to do what I had to do right there.”

Tagliani, a veteran road racing ace from Canada who was driving the No. 22 Ford of Team Penske, finished second. And a not too happy second.

After the race he attacked Smith with words, not fists.

“If I knew that he was going to win like that,” Tagliani said, “probably instead of passing him fair and square early-on in the race, I probably would have pushed him off a bit. He knows I’m not going to be there next weekend to retaliate and to give him a payback.

“To see him celebrate after a win like that…he knows he was not going to win unless he pushes us off.”

Dillon finished third while Chris Buescher and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five.
