Joe Gibbs Racing swept positions one through three during Friday afternoon’s qualifying session for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

sprint-logo-08Claiming P1 was Matt Kenseth.

He was followed by teammates Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards. A fourth JGR driver, Kyle Busch, qualified sixth fastest.

Asked if he foresaw a sweep by JGR Toyotas, Kenseth said, “Maybe the 1, 2, 3, but I didn’t think I’d be in the three.”

Kenseth covered the distance in 36.458 seconds (197.488 mph) to win his third pole of the season, his first at MIS and the 16th of his career.

“What a great day for Joe Gibbs Racing,” Hamlin, who was bumped from the pole by Kenseth just as the session was ending, said. “This is a testament to the hard work they put in. Matt was probably too old to remember to lift (off the gas pedal) there, so he got us.”

The only non JGR drivers in the top six of the two-tiered qualifier were Austin Dillon of Richard Childress Racing, who was fourth fastest, and Tony Stewart of Stewart-Haas Racing.

“The Gibbs cars have been really good this year,” Dillon said. “To break one of them at least out of the top four was nice.”
