Nico Rosberg took the lead from Mercedes AMG teammate Lewis Hamilton when Hamliton pitted under safety car conditions with 11 laps to go and went on to win the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco on Sunday.

Rosberg became just the fourth driver to win three in a row in the historic race through the streets of Monte Carlo.

Hamliton had held a huge lead prior to a hard crash by teen-ager Max Verstappen of Scuderia Toro Rosso that brought out the safety car.

Hamilton, who started the race from the pole, emerged from the pits behind Rosberg and Sabastian Vettel in a Ferrari.

When the race went green on Lap 71 of  the 78-lap race, Rosberg sprinted away from Vettel.

Behind the four-time champion’s Ferrari, Hamilton could not get close enough to take a shot at finishing second.

Hamilton, upset about the decision to pit him while holding the lead, finished third.

Fourth was Daniil Kvyat of Scudiera Torro Rosso while Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who, over the final three laps had challenged Hamilton’s Silver Arrows for third, was fifth.
