Kyle Larson Pulls Off Triple Play At Chili Bowl

| , RacinToday.com Wednesday, January 14 2015

NASCAR star Kyle Larson dominated the first night of racing at the Chili Bowl.

Overcoming disaster following a heat race crash, Kyle Larson collected three feature victories during Tuesday’s Warren Cat Qualifying Night, opening event of the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire.

En route to his third career Preliminary Night A-Feature victory, Larson won his C-Feature from sixth, the B-Feature from 13th and the 25-lap A-Feature to lock himself into Saturday night’s championship event around Tulsa Expo Raceway’s quarter-mile clay oval inside the River Spirit Expo Center.

The A-Feature outcome admittedly surprised Larson, already a rising star after his rookie season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2014 for car-owner Chip Ganassi.

“If I was to get to the ‘A,’ I thought if I could finish in the top-six or seven it would be a solid recovery,” Larson said. “Everything seemed to fall my way after that Heat Race accident.”

In his first time behind the wheel of Midget since running the Chili Bowl in 2014, Missouri’s Brad Loyet wheeled the Vacuworx Global No. 05 to the second-place podium step despite nearly losing the handle at the race’s halfway point.

“It was one of those things where I kind of got caught early on following (Zach) Daum and watching his line,” Loyet said. “Every time he’d make a mistake, I’d make one. My car was a little bit too snug and when I almost lost everything about halfway through the race, I sat back and relaxed, and realized that if we make some solid laps here, we’re going to be in the show on Saturday.”

On track to be the 2015 Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston put his Racer’s for Autism No. 39b into Saturday’s feature with the third and final transfer from Tuesday’s A-Feature.

“I’m really just in awe right now. I’m just in shock. I’m sitting here shaking, and trying to get through my mind that I just made it in the A-Main,” Bayston said. “Two years ago, I was sitting at home watching YouTube videos of Kyle, Brad all those guys race around here. To be racing against them is a true honor.”

Joey Saldana raced from 12th to fourth with Terry Babb completing the top-five.

The Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions saw fan favorite Sammy Swindell claim his fourth victory since 2009. Handed the fourth starting spot by son Kevin in a “revenge draw,” Sammy reluctantly had to forfeit the No. 1 spot to 1990 Chili Bowl Champion John Heydenreich.

Swindell still grabbed the lead on the opening lap, and was only challenged on the closing lap by Bryan Clauson, who pulled nearly even on the cushion in the final turns. Clauson settled for second after starting 12th, with Cory Kruseman, Christopher Bell and Larson completing the top-five.

Tuesday’s Warren Cat Qualifying Night saw 85 drivers draw-in. Of those, nine flipped over. All were able to walk away under their own power.

Racing continues with Wednesday’s River Spirit Casino Qualifying Night and 82 drivers scheduled to qualify. Hot Laps begin at 5 p.m. (CST) with racing at 6. General Admission seating is available with the purchase of a Pit Pass. For more information on the Chili Bowl, including a complete schedule of events, log onto http://www.chilibowl.com.
