Tony Stewart has decided not to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event this weekend at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, his team said in a statement released to the media on Thursday.

Veteran driver Jeff Burton, a winner of 21 Sprint Cup races, will drive the No. 14 Mobil 1/Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing in place of Stewart.

The driver change pertains only to Michigan. Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined.

At 10 a.m. EDT on Friday in the deadline room of the infield media center at Michigan, Burton will be part of a press briefing featuring SHR executive vice president Brett Frood and SHR vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli.

Stewart was involved in an incident last Saturday at a New York dirt track in which a young racer was killed when he got out of his wrecked car and walked toward’s Stewart’s moving car during a caution.

Stewart’s car struck the young driver.

The three-time Sprint Cup champion opted to sit out last Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen International.
