Donny Schatz  continued his dominance of sprint car racing’s biggest event on Saturday night when he won the Knoxville Nationals for the eighth time in nine years.

Schatz is now just three wins away from tying Steve Kinser’s Knoxville mark.

Brian Brown finished second for the third year in a row.

Kerry Madsen, Craig Dollansky and Justin Henderson rounded out the top five.

“It’s unbelievable – it feels so unreal, like it’s not happening,” Schatz said. “I haven’t gotten a chance to get with the team and celebrate, but I definitely want to enjoy this. We raced good and hard with Brian. I had an awesome car all week long. Not very often that you get a car that good but these guys have worked awful hard to get us in this position and they put it on my shoulders when we went.”

The win, which included a $150,000 payday for Schatz and his STP/Armor All team, was all the sweeter for the driver who is celebrating a birthday on Sunday.

Schatz started on the pole. It didn’t take him long to build a  big early and began lapping cars after only a dozen laps.

Schatz’s nearly three-second lead was erased at the scheduled red flag break at the halfway mark of the 50-lap main.

Brown caught and passed Schatz with seven laps to go but Schatz took the lead back two laps later and clinched his fourth consecutive Knoxville title.

The margin of victory was 1.2 seconds.

“At least we kept it honest,” Brown said. “We just didn’t get the job done. My guys gave me a car that could do it.”

Saturday night’s race could have been the final Knoxville Nationals for Kinser.

Kinser, a 20-time World of Outlaws series champion and a 12-time winner of the Knoxville race, announced before the season that this will be his last running for the series points title.

Poor qualifying runs earlier this week left Kinser needing to advance through two preliminary races simply to reach the finals.

Once the A main began, Kinser began entangled in a 10-car crash that saw at least four cars flip and two nearly land in the infield. Kinser’s car was among seven that were too damaged to continue.
