Chase Elliott posted his third NASCAR Nationwide Series victory of the season when he won the EnjoyIllinois.com 300 at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday night.

Elliott looked nothing like a rookie as he led 85 of 200 laps on the 1.5-mile tri-oval in suburban Joliet.

“This is an unbelievable night,” Elliott said. “We were fortunate enough to be in contention on that last pit stop, the guys busted their butts for me and that was the deciding factor.”

The finish also gave Elliott, the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, his 13th top-10 finish in 2014.

“We all as a team, we completed our task tonight. And that was the difference.”

Trevor Bayne of Roush Fenway Racing finished second, 1.7 seconds back. He was followed by Kyle Larson, Kasey Kahne and Ty Dillon.

“We got our car turning there at the end,” Bayne said. “That’s probably the strongest weekend we’ve had in a while. Had it stayed green for another 15, we might have had it, but that’s 15 laps we’ll never know about.

Bayne posted his third top-10 finish in seven races at Chicagoland. It is his 13th top-10 finish in 2014.

“What a great finish tonight,” he said. “It feels great to be able to race up front and battle for the lead. Our car was so fast in the second-half of the race that we were able to really make some moves out there on the high line. I hate that we came so close to getting the win but I know that this No.6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang team is close. With that in mind, I’m definitely ready to head to Indianapolis next weekend. We’ve got momentum on our side right now. I’m ready to go.”

Pole-sitter Brian Scott earned $100,000 in the Nationwide Insurance Dash 4 Cash for finishing sixth, ahead of fellow D4C competitors Chris Buescher (eighth), Elliott Sadler (10th) and Regan Smith (16th).

Smith entered the race as the series points leader but Elliott’s victory moved him to the top of the standings.

A series of green-flag pit stops around Lap 161 shuffled the field with teams hoping they could make it to the finish without it turning into a fuel-mileage race.

Bayne took the lead at Lap 161 when the leaders made stops for service and held on until he had to come in on Lap 176 for four tires and fuel. Elliott inherited the lead, and kept it for the remainder of the race.
