Joey Logano passed Jeff Gordon for the lead on the final lap and went on to win Monday’s rain-delayed Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

The victory was the first of the season for Team Penske’s Logano – who started the day eighth in points – and the fourth of his career.  It gave him four top-five finishes in the first seven races of the 2014 season.

Logano led 108 laps in getting the victory and marked the sixth time in seven races that he has led laps. The victory came after a green/white/checkered restart and made him the seventh different winner of the season.

“I felt very confident about this race,” Logano said. “For some reason I told Todd Gordon I said, ‘We’re gonna win this week,’ and I was mad when we didn’t get the pole, but I felt like we had a car that could win this thing today. At the beginning we didn’t, and then Todd and the guys made good adjustments and had good stops all day. And that one longer run I came through and was able to drive up to fifth and get some cautions to be able to get our track position up towards the front. Clean air means everything, so, heck yeah.”

Hendrick Motorsports’ Gordon finished second. That finished moved him to the points lead.

Third was Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch. He was followed by Brian Vickers of Michael Waltrip Racing.

Rounding out the top five was rookie Kyle Larson of Chip Ganassi Racing.

Logano appeared to have the race won late in the race as he had a comfortable lead with two laps to to. But a minor scrape with the wall by Kurt Busch brought out the yellow to set up a green/white/checkered restart.

Logano, who took four tires during the pit stop after the Busch yellow, restarted second. But when the race went green he stayed with Gordon and then managed the pass on the final lap.

“That was a great battle,” Gordon said. “At one point I thought we had a shot at it. We got a pretty good restart. Joey was right on me and I was pretty loose in one and two, and I wish I had gone a little bit higher in three and four. But, he got that run off of four and he got in the back of me, and I thought I was going to wreck, so at that point I was like second would be good.”

The pass and victory represented a bit of justice as Logano had dominated the late going on Monday.

Logano took the lead from Brad Keselowski during a restart on lap 227 of the 334-lap race.

From there he built on his lead, stretching it to 4.5 seconds over second-place Keselowski on lap 287.

Ten laps later, green flag pit stops began. When those stops cycled through, Logano was in the lead but Keselowski had cut the deficit to 1.6 seconds.

Keselowski could not make up much ground until the final 12 laps.  With Logano caught in traffic, his lead fell to about a second. Once in the clear however, Logano again pulled away.

But with less than a lap to the white flag, the caution fell and the green/white/checkered ending was set up.

During pit stops, Gordon took two tires and was first out of the pits. Keselowski came out second and Logano third. Keselowski, however, was penalized for speeding coming out.

It all set up the late race-winning pass.
