In discussing the 2013 RacinToday.com Driver of the Year vote this week, veteran racing writer Mark Armijo asked the following question: How can you punish a driver for domination?

Other RT voters answered back: You can’t.

Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel, who dominated a racing season like few others have in recent eras, was named winner of  the RTDOTY vote Tuesday, beating out NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth.

Vettel received the votes of five of RacinToday’s 10 writers while Johnson attracted three votes and Kenseth two.

The 26-year-old German driver won nine races in a row in 2013 driving for Red Bull Racing: the ninth of those wins in a row tied the record set by Italy’s Alberto Ascari of Ferrari during his world championship seasons in 1952-53.

Vettel won 13 races overall last season to equal compatriot Michael Schumacher’s 2004 record with Ferrari.

Vettel, who won his fourth F1 World Championship, was so dominant that he locked up the championship at the Grand Prix of India four races before the end of the season.

Senior writer Jonathan Ingram, doped out the Vettel vs. Johnson situation by saying the Cup champ had tougher competition but Vettel had tougher cars to drive.

“Which one won more races – none of which were gimmes? Vettel,” Ingram said in summing the head-to-head situation up.

Some fans booed Vettel during the season. RacinToday.com does not.

The RT voting panel consists of staff writers Larry Woody, Rick Minter, Jeff Hood, Jonathan Ingram, Mike Harris, Deb Williams, Nick Bromberg, Mark Armijo, John Sturbin and Jim Pedley.

Happy New Racing Year to all.

I would rightfully beg to differ with the Red Bullies, because they abandoned NASCAR and Stock Cars when they needed sponsors. I would say Jake “The Cardinal” Strayer of ASCS’s Knoxville Raceway 305s from Sweet Home Newton,IA All Summer Long, even though he didn’t win a Knoxville Feature and missed a Pay Your Bills for 6 Months Rookie of the Year by 2 Races. And, my postseason driver of the year is King of the Outlaws Steve Kinser, to honor the World of Outlaws like USAC or IndyCar. Even though I am not usually a Winged Sprint Car Person, but,I prefer more Network TV Races live for the USAC and Outlaws again, and everyone is titled to their opinion. But, I feel more comfortable rooting on Role Models for Children.
