Jim Minter To Be Honored By Georgia Racing Hall Of Fame
During his career as a newsman, Jim Minter worked hard to make sure that racers were viewed as athletes in the pages of the newspapers he worked for.
On Dec. 13, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame will honor Minter for his contributions to racing as a journalist, as he will receive the Jimmy Mosteller Excellence In Motorsports Journalism Award.
The award, which was created to recognize achievements in motorsports journalism, along with supporting racing in the state of Georgia, is named in honor of Georgia racing Hall of Fame member Mosteller, himself a lifelong supporter and promoter of motorsports in Georgia and around the southeast.
Minter, the father of RacinToday.com senior writer Rick Minter, joins Capt. Herb Emory (2012) as a recipient of the award.
Jim Minter began his journalism career as a writer for the University of Georgia’s Red and Black newspaper as a sportswriter. He would ultimately move his way to Atlanta, working for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. Eventually he would become the executive director of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1971.
While Minter would become one of the most influential newspapermen in the business, he never turned his back on motorsports, making sure that the racers were treated as the athletes they were. He was an early supporter of the fledgling NASCAR circuit, reporting on races from Atlanta’s Lakewood Speedway, Peach Bowl Speedway Atlanta International Raceway (now Atlanta Motor Speedway) and others.
He worked to make sure that racers from every level and from every form of racing got the coverage they deserved, and that hard work helped to bring respect to racers across the state and across the region.
Minter will be honored as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Driver of the Year at the 2013 Georgia Racing Hall of Fame induction banquet, the same night that Charles Barrett, Frank Christian, Huston Platt, Hank Blalock and Freddy Fryar will be inducted as members of the 2013 class of inductees.
The 2013 Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Induction banquet will be held on Dec. 13, 2013 at 6 pm at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located inside the Dawsonville Municipal Complex in Dawsonville, Georgia.
A limited number of seats for the banquet are available. Reservations are required to attend. For information on purchasing a ticket or on the banquet, call the Hall of Fame at (706) 216-RACE (7223).No Comment
