Donny Schatz, Darrell Lanigan and Brett Hearn each scored A-Main wins Friday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte during the seventh annual World of Outlaws World Finals in Concord, N.C.

Fans from 50 states, seven Canadian provinces, Australia, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands filled the stands and pit area for the second night of the World Finals around the four-tenths-mile clay oval. The three-day event brings together dirt racing’s three premier divisions – the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds – to end their seasons and crown respective champions.

Schatz earned his seventh career win at The Dirt Track at Charlotte during Friday’s World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series A-Main, cutting into the points lead held by Daryn Pittman, who finished sixth. The win gave Schatz the distinction of being the winningest World of Outlaws driver at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. The Fargo, N.D., native started fourth and worked his way to the front, taking the lead from Brian Brown on Lap 13.

“I’m here to win races. I’m not here to count points,” Schatz said of his championship battle with Pittman. “We’ve done as good a job as we can. I’m not going to hang my head.”

Searching for his first career Sprint Car main-event win, Brown won the Dash and started on-pole. Brown finished second , with Joey Saldana, Shane Stewart and Jason Sides rounding out the top-five.

Winners of the five, eight-lap Sprint Car heat races were Jason Sides, Saldana, Cody Darrah, Caleb Helms and Greg Wilson. Jimmy Seger took the D-Main, Justin Henderson won the C-Main and Jac Haudenschild won the Last Chance Showdown.

Lanigan, of Union, Ky., led from flag-to-flag to his first win at The Dirt Track at Charlotte and his 12th of the year in the World of Outlaws Late Model A-Main. “When we had clear traffic, we were really able to pick up the pace there,” Lanigan said. “Once I got behind the lapped cars, I got the same pace they did. When you get clean air, you really pick up the pace. The car has been phenomenal. We got a new set-up on it. It’s unbelievable.”

Lanigan started on-pole and led the field through four cautions and all 50 laps. However, right behind him, Josh Richards and Scott Bloomquist were in constant contention for second place. Despite hard racing, Richards was unable to recapture his second-place position after losing the spot on Lap 2.

Following close behind Bloomquist and Richards were Don O’Neal and Rick Eckert, who rounded out the top-five.

Richards clinched the 2013 World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship after Friday’s A-Main Feature. Richards earned his third series championship, making him the first driver since 2004 to hold that honor.

Late Model heat race winners were Richards, Eckert, Bloomquist, Lanigan, Tyler Reddick and O’Neal. Eric Wells, Ryan Gustin and Austin Hubbard scored victories in the three B-Features.

Hearn, of Kinnelon, N.J., led all 40 laps in Friday night’s Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified A-Main to claim his 115th series win and third at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. But the win didn’t come easy to the championship points leader. In a race that saw four cautions, Hearn had to fend-off a hard-charging Stewart Friesen in the closing laps to take the win. Friesen, Matt Sheppard, Dale Planck and Gary Tomkins rounded out the top-five.

“I didn’t know how many laps were left,” Hearn said. “I just ran as hard as I could, then I heard ‘Checkers!’ I just can’t believe it.”

Chasing his eighth series championship, Hearn said his entire team was eager to come to The Dirt Track for the season-finale. “I think the whole team has been motivated all year to come here and race,” he said. “These are real race fans from all over the country and it means a lot.”
