As expected, Furniture Row Racing announced Friday that veteran Martin Truex Jr. will drive the team’s Sprint Cup car next season.

Truex will fill the seat being vacated by Kurt Busch, a member of this year’s Chase, who is moving to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014.

“This is a big deal for me,” Truex said. “I’ve been impressed by what they’ve accomplished this year. I feel real blessed and real excited.”

The deal is for multi years.

“Martin can win races,” FRR general manager Joe Garone said. “He’s a Chase level driver.”

“There are a lot of different things I had to think about,” Truex said. “Just the opportunity to do something to try to be better, I think was the deciding factor. The opportunity to go to a winning race car, start fresh and hopefully do the thing I want to do. I just got excited about the opportunity. This is only the second time I’ve changed teams. It’s very difficult. I’ve had a great four years at Michael Waltrip Racing. I really enjoyed my time there. I wouldn’t change anything that ever happened there. I mean it was great. Just after all the stuff went down I just felt like it was time for change. I think this will be a good one.”

Truex began his Cup career driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2004. When DEI merged with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2009, Truex became one of Earnhardt-Ganassi’s drivers.

From there, he moved to Michael Waltrip Racing in 2010.

The New Jersey native has started 294 Cup races in his career. He has two victories, 30 top-fives finishes and 88 top-10s.

Truex appeared to have made this year’s Chase after the final non-playoff race of the season at Richmond. But NASCAR issued penalties, saying that Truex’s MWR teammates and deliberately manipulated the outcome of the Richmond race in an effort to get Truex in.

“It’s been a roller-coaster of emotions,” Truex said. “It’s something I never felt could happen. I think I dealt with it pretty good. It was tough but I’ve got my health, good people around me who keep me grounded.”

MWR issued a statement Friday saying, “Michael Waltrip Racing congratulates Martin on his announcement today. We are very happy to see him in a competitive ride next year and appreciate the professionalism everyone showed throughout this entire process.”

Busch took over the Colorado-based Furniture Row car this year. With the 2004 Cup champion driving, the car made the Chase for the first time in its history.

Martin Truex is done as a driver, he has just taken a step backwards. Furniture Row racing had a fluke year this past year, they will be back to their tail end running next year.
