Pagenaud Wins Street Fight

Frenchman Simon Pagenaud gritted out a victory in Baltimore.

Simon Pagenaud became a two-time IZOD IndyCar Series race-winner Sunday when he won the Grand Prix of Baltimore street race.

In picking up the victory, and because many of the series’ top points earners ran into trouble in Baltimore, Pagenaud moved up to third in the season standings.

“The car was fantastic,” Pagenaud said. “We got very lucky on the restarts; we didn’t get collected. I pushed hard on the last restart against Marco (Andretti) and TK (Tony Kanaan). Awesome job for the HP team. They’ve been awesome this weekend and I guess it’s good for the championship.”

Young American driver Josef Newgarden finished second on the 12-turn, 2.04-mile course.

Sebastien Bourdais – a Frenchman like Pagenaud, was third.

Running into trouble and posting DNFs in the race were Scott Dixon, second in points, and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was third when the race started.

Points leader Helio Castroneves also found trouble during the race – a couple times in the form of contact and once in the form of a penalty – was able to scrape out a ninth-place finish. By doing he was able to pad his points lead over Dixon.
