Guess the new surface and banking at Kansas Speedway agree with Matt Kenseth as the veteran driver followed up his victory last fall at the 1.5-mile oval with a pole-winning effort during qualifying on Friday afternoon.

Kenseth, who won last year driving a Roush Fenway Racing Ford, won the pole for this Sunday’s STP 400 Sprint Cup race in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

“My most exciting pole,” Kenseth said, and then adding that he has only won eight others. “Didn’t think we had a chance at sitting on it, frankly. Just wasn’t expecting it.”

The pole-winning, late-session lap was at 191.864 mph. The lap knocked hometown favorite and former Roush Fenway teammate Carl Edwards off the pole.

Edwards will start second after putting down a lap at 191.748 mph.

Third fastest in qualifying was rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Edwards’ current teammate.

Rounding out the top 5 were Sam Hornish Jr. of Penske Racing and Kyle Busch, Kenseth’s teammate.
