Joe Gibbs Racing issued the following statement Monday afternoon on the condition of driver Denny Hamlin, who was injured during a last-lap crash in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.:

“Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver Denny Hamlin suffered a L1 Compression Fracture following an accident on the final lap of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

Hamlin hopes to be released today to fly to his home in North Carolina where he will be evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates later this week.”

Hamlin was battling former teammate Joey Logano – who now drives for Penske Racing – for the lead on the final when the two bumped and crashed.

As they were crashing, JGR’s Kyle Busch blew past and went on to get the victory.

Thumbs up for old-time hard-assed NASCAR racing. A refreshing change from previous yawners. Two things led to Denny Hamlin’s unfortunate brutal hit to the inside wall and resulting injury: 1.) Denny briefly kept his foot in the gas as he got sideways and headed down the banking 2.) No inside soft walls, inexcusable for a NASCAR-owned track. Best Wishes to Denny for a quick recovery so he will be ready for Martinsville.

I was on the phone at the same with my Dad at the ending. I was jumping up and down, screaming at the tv and whooooosh goes Rowdy for the win. Incredible finish! Incredible racing! Joey and Denny were racing perfectly clean just until Joey got a little loose on Turn 3. There’s nothing further to discuss about it. Denny’s injury resulted in no safer barrier. What the heck is Tony Stewart even talking about? ["...he sent Denny to the hospital..."]
At what point in Joey’s career did we all miss the part where he became Satan in Nascar form sending drivers directly into walls with no safer barrier? Joey has always been a good guy. Excuse me, he IS a good guy and he was just doing his job on Sunday. How the Nascar fandom has created battlelines and complete hatred toward one driver over the other in this is quite baffling. They’re being blatantly ignorant.

    ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???

    To Denny and Joey,
Best racing I have seen in a very long time great story to watch unfold, fresher tires vs old tires, 6 laps left and lead car over heating badly will it make it?? With to back drop of last week issues guys in my mind no one did anything wrong that is what we call old school hard racing at it was great to watch.
Very sorry Denny got hurt never want to see that ever but guys you both drive your hearts out showed guts and went for it darn proud of both of you.
Denny rest and get better and Joey don’t worry about Smoke he most likely would have done the same or he should have this was a restart going for the win.
    Thanks guys great racing!!!
