Joe Gibbs Racing issued the following statement Monday afternoon on the condition of driver Denny Hamlin, who was injured during a last-lap crash in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.:

“Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver Denny Hamlin suffered a L1 Compression Fracture following an accident on the final lap of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

Hamlin hopes to be released today to fly to his home in North Carolina where he will be evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates later this week.”

Hamlin was battling former teammate Joey Logano – who now drives for Penske Racing – for the lead on the final when the two bumped and crashed.

As they were crashing, JGR’s Kyle Busch blew past and went on to get the victory.
