Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix Formula 1 race on Sunday.

His victory came in a Lotus.

Raikkonen won by taking only two pit stops, compared to three for each of the six cars which followed in Melbourne.

Raikkonen took the lead for good on lap 43 of 58 in a race that had seven different leaders. After assuming the lead, he drove  conservatively in the closing laps while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel – the defending series champion – attempted to keep up.

Raikkonen became the 15th driver in F1 history to record 20 grand prix wins.

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was fourth.

Lewis Hamilton was fifth in his first race for Mercedes.

Mark Webber of Red Bull was sixth. The Australian local favorite qualified second on Sunday morning, as qualifying was postponed from Saturday due to heavy rain.
