With much of the field wrecking behind him, Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag and won the Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday afternoon.

Jeff Gordon finished second and Kyle Busch third.

Those drivers survived the wild final lap after a green/white/checkered restart.

The big wreck, which happened between turns 3 and 4 on the final lap, started when Tony Stewart was hit from behind by Michael Waltrip as Stewart moved down to get into the bottom line.

“I screwed up,” Stewart said, admitting, yes, he moved down into Waltrip. “I just turned across Michael.”

Stewart’s car wound up going airborne. Also among those caught up in the wreck were Chase drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Clint Bowyer.

In all, 20 cars were involved in the wreck.

“That’s the craziest, craziest finish I’ve seen” at Talladega, Gordon said.

David Ragan finished fourth, Regan Smith fifth and Greg Biffle sixth.

Biffle got out of his car and gave a first-driver account of the wreck: “If I told you, you wouldn’t believe me. Unbelievable. I was probably 20th and five-wide up against the wall and then cars started wrecking. A car flew over the top of my car as I turned to the bottom and missed guys by three inches. It was like Days of Thunder coming through the smoke and the grass and just kept it going straight. That’s all I did and once I was clear of all

the stuff I kept going to the start-finish line, but it was the craziest thing I’ve ever been involved in in my life.”

Brad Keselowski, who finished seventh, padded his points lead over Johnson to 14 points. Hamlin, who nursed his car home to an 11th-place finish Sunday, is third in points – 20 behind Keselowski.

    Ditto, Doc.

Stop propping up these tired, outdated racing venues with these silly, dangerous styles of racing. And…Daytona, Talladega (and Indy) are all pi**-poor spectator venues also. Wanna SEE the race? Stay home and watch it on TV!

I don’t like Talladega racing. Three hours of watching freeway traffic go by followed by a demolition derby. Might as well pick a winner by drawing a name out of a hat. Why wait until a driver or fan is killed? Eliminate this turkey of a track now.
