Darlington Adds Tailgate Area

| , RacinToday.com Tuesday, April 3 2012

Tailgating is a natural part of the Southern culture race fans enjoy at Darlington Raceway. To accommodate an ever-growing demand for tailgating prior to the track’s events, management is offering a new area outside Turn 2 – the Too Tough to Tailgate Zone – beginning with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 on Saturday, May 12.

Darlington Raceway – the “Track Too Tough to Tame” – has been a NASCAR staple since 1950. On Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-12, NASCAR’s stars will return for the Nationwide Series VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 and Cup’s Bojangles Southern 500®.

For $50 per spot, fans will receive a 20×20 space in the Tailgate Zone, big enough to accommodate one passenger vehicle, a pop-up tent, tables, chairs and a grill. There are no limitations as to how many guests can tailgate per space. Admission to the Bojangles’ Southern 500 is not included in the price; tickets to the race must be purchased when ordering a tailgating spot.

The Too Tough to Tailgate Zone will open at 9 a.m. on race day (Saturday only) and close when the race begins at approximately 7 p.m. The Tailgate Zone, located outside of Turn 2, can be accessed through Gate 1 off Harry Byrd Highway (US 151).

“The Too Tough to Tailgate Zone name was voted on by the fans, so ‘thank you’ to everyone who participated via Facebook and Twitter to choose a fitting name for the area,” said Chris Browning, Darlington Raceway president. “We enjoy engaging fans socially and asking them to help us with initiatives like this. It is their area to enjoy, so it’s fitting that they chose the name for it.”

Additionally, Darlington Raceway ticket office hours are changing to accommodate race fans who might not be able to purchase tickets during normal business hours. From now until the race weekend, the ticket office will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Vicki Gilbert, Darlington ticket manager, noted the office also will be open on Good Friday, April 6, and then be open seven-days-a-week beginning the day after Easter on Monday, April 9. In addition to the normal 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday schedule, hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets to the Sprint Cup Bojangles’ Southern 500 and Nationwide VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 also can be purchased anytime at DarlingtonRaceway.com.
