Canadian Alex Tagliani won the pole for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday.

Driving for Sam Schmidt Racing, Tagliani secured the pole on the final run of Pole Day. He edged former 500 winner Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing off the top with his late run.

Dixon will start next Sunday’s race from the middle of the front row.

Qualifying third and completing the front row was Oriol Servia of Newman Haas Racing.

In all, nine drivers – The Fast Nine – went for the pole late in the day under the qualifying format which was introduced last year. Those nine were culled from the top of all who attempted qualifying runs earlier in the day.

The top 24 Saturday locked in spots. The rest of the field will be filled out on Sunday.

But only the top three of those have locked in their starting positions.

Also in the Fast Nine were Townsend Bell, Will Power, Dan Wheldon, Buddy Rice, Ed Carpenter and Dario Franchitti, the winner of last year’s race.
