Daytona Beach, Fla. – NASCAR tire-testing on Daytona International Speedway’s recently repaved 2.5-mile racing surface is scheduled for Dec. 15-16.

The Goodyear Racing test will mark the first time race cars will turn laps on a surface that has been repaved for only the second time in its history. Lane Construction began the historic project on July 5, using an estimated 50,000 tons of asphalt to repave more than 1.4-million square feet well before the target completion date of Jan. 1, 2011.

Drivers participating in the test will be announced at a later date.

“This test is going to be important for Goodyear as they construct a tire for Speedweeks 2011 and the 53rd annual Daytona 500,” said Joie Chitwood III, DIS president. “We can’t wait to hear the roar of engines again on the high banks.”

Speedweeks 2011 will kick off with the 49th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race on Jan. 29-30 and conclude with NASCAR’s 53rd annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 20 – the prestigious season-opening event to the Sprint Cup Series.

Goodyear’s tire test will be open to the public with free access to the Oldfield Grandstands through the lobby of the DIS ticket office.

Additionally, two test sessions have been scheduled for January –  the Roar Before The Rolex 24 on Jan. 7-9 and NASCAR Preseason Thunder with the Sprint Cup teams on Jan. 20-22 (with Jan. 23 as the rain date).

“This (test) allows everyone an equal opportunity to work on their setups and get everything in order leading up to Speedweeks and the running of the Daytona 500,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition.  “Additionally, it gives the teams the chance to get accustomed to the new pit road and the added runoff areas on the backstretch. We’re excited about the new surface and believe it will only enhance the racing experience at Daytona.”

All NASCAR Preseason Thunder sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., weather permitting. Each includes a lunch break from noon until 1 p.m.

The NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest at Daytona will run as a companion event to the January test. Along with watching NASCAR Preseason Thunder track activity from Daytona’s Sprint Fanzone, fans can enjoy Fan Fest sessions from 5-9 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 21, and from 5-7 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Driver question-and-answer and autograph sessions are planned. Tickets for the NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest are $20. Autograph session wristbands will be available at a later date. Fans purchasing NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest tickets early will receive the first opportunity at securing those wristbands.

Fans also can watch each day’s testing at no cost from a section of the Oldfield Grandstands.

Teams from the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck series are expected to receive extra practice time during Speedweeks 2011 to get acclimated to the track’s new surface.

Tickets are priced at $15 for the Roar Before The Rolex 24, tune-up session for Grand-Am teams in advance of the 49th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Tickets for the NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fests and Roar Before The Rolex 24 are available online at http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.
