Charlotte, N.C. – I voted for David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip.

It was a VERY difficult decision this year because of the stirring and passionate debate among the committee over performance versus pioneering.

I voted for Pearson a year ago and saw no reason to change that.

Lee Petty was my nod to the pioneers of the sport. I wanted to be sure to include at least one of the old-timers this year. And, in the end, I voted for the three drivers who were the top competitors during most of my tenure as AP Auto Racing Writer – Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. They are very much linked together in my mind.

I’m very pleased for Ned Jarrett and Bud Moore, Both are deserving choices, although I really expected eight-time champion crew chief Dale Inman would be the first wrench turner in the Hall.

And I’m already thinking that my ballot for next year – should I be invited to serve on the committee again – will certainly include Yarborough, Waltrip and Inman.

  • Bob says:

So after his behavior acting like a petulent child on air after the announcement are you likely to vote for Waltrip again? He took the focus off of those that were voted in to call attention to himself. What a tool!

  • Terry says:

I am in agreement with this years voted. Last year’s was a bad joke after Junior …Big BILL…and PETTY…..
How could Pearson not go in ?
