Joliet, Ill. – Jamie McMurray on Friday afternoon won the pole for Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. His fast lap was at 183.542 mph.
The pole was the third of the season for McMurray and his Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing team.
“Bono (Kevin Manion, crew chief) did a really good job,” McMurray said. “He made the right changes. That is just all the faster we could go. We had a lot of grip and the balance is good.”
Second in qualifying was four time champion Jimmie Johnson, who had a fast lap of 183.281 mph.
Johnson, who will start second for the third time in the last four races, made his run two days after becoming a father.
“I’ve had six hours of sleep the last two days,” Johnson said. “If there ever was a weekend where I could have an excuse for not having my head in it, this is it.”
He joked that he may trying qualifying on just six hours of sleep some time in the future.
Third fastest was Tony Stewart while Greg Biffle was fourth.
“We’re making gains,” Stewart, who has three top-five finishes in his last five races, said. “I don’t know if we’re there yet but we’re making gains.”
Sam Hornish Jr. was fifth, Jeff Gordon sixth and David Reutimann seventh.
McMurray, who won this year’s Daytona 500, is 19th in points and coming off a wreck-forced 39th-place finish at Daytona last weekend. No Comment
