Joey Logano, beginning his second full season in Sprint Cup, won the pole for the Food City 500 on Friday afternoon at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Logano ran at lap 124.630 mph in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to take his first Sprint Cup pole.

“We have a really fast Home Depot Toyota, for sure,” Logano said. “We worked hard in qualifying practice earlier and we were going to start 10th-place car and kept making little changes and they got it pretty good. It was good, I’m happy about it, how we picked up. Some guys are picking up, some guys not so much.

“We picked up a little bit and we’re happy with that. Bristol is a really cool race track. It’s a track I usually I don’t run really good at, I usually get caught up in a wreck really early. If we start up front we should have a better shot at making it through the mess. We have a really fast race car.”

Following Logano were Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch and Dave Blaney in a Toyota.

Four-time champion Jimmie Johnson – who has yet to win at Bristol – was fourth in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet while teammate Jeff Gordon was fifth.

“I am very proud of the effort today,” Johnson said. “We came with a plan, we made the car better, we followed our plan and have a good qualifying effort. Very pleased, can’t thank Chad (Knaus, crew chief) and these guys. It has been frustrating for all of us to try and learn this race track. But with great support from Kobalt Tools and Lowe’s and my great teammates for Chad and I getting there. Man, our deal is working together finally here and we hope to show that on Sunday.”

The race is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Logano was also fast in practice on Friday.
