Hometown boy Kurt Busch won the pole for Sunday’s Shelby American Sprint Cup race Friday afternoon at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It was the first Vegas pole for Busch, who drives the No. 2 Dodge for Penske Racing.

But it was the second in a row for his crew chief, Steve Addington. Addington won the pole and the race last year as crew chief for Busch’s younger brother, Kyle.

“I’m stoked,” Kurt Busch, the 2004 series champion, said of his first hometown pole victory.

Second fastest and starting next to Busch the front row will be four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Ryan Newman of Stewart-Haas Racing was third fastest and Hendrick’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth.

Kyle Busch was sixth. Right behind him was his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Joey Logano.

In all, 18 drivers broke the old track record during qualifying. Jeff Gordon was asked why.

“Tires,” Gordon said. “There’s a new tire Goodyear brought. I don’t know all the differences. But it’s definitely the tires. The teams do a great job. We bring a little bit more power this year over the off-season and make a little bit more power. We find ways to make the cars a little bit faster, but the majority of what happened today was tires.”
