Yes, it's the biggest NASCAR story of the decade. Yes, you're all over-reacting. I've been watching auto racing since the Sixties. It wasn't uncommon to have two or three deaths a year in each of the big series. Guys who were at the top of their game, last year's champion.

Earnhardt was just another racing death. Sure he was well-loved. But he was driving a race car, ignoring the safety precautions and relying on not running into the the guy he crashed just ahead of him. Danger was expected, and still is.

Earnhardt may have had another championship in him, but he was in decline. The deaths of Kulwicki, Allison and Petty had a greater impact on the actual racing.

Several positive changes came out of Earnhardt's death. NASCAR finally got off their butt and started making the improvements that should have been done when Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin died. They have yet to install a permanent & consistent medical team like the IRL though. And they haven't used the lower race attendance as an opportunity to take out the first ten rows of seats. Either of those things is liable to catch them short this year.

Ron, I understand your point but I continue to watch and have continually since Dale got killed because that is what he would have wanted us to do. If Richard Childress Racing and DEI could pick themselves up the week after Dale's death and go racing (and win, by the way), then it's the least I can do to watch the races in Dale Earnhardt's honor. And along those lines, the spring race at Atlanta and July race at Daytona in 2001 lifted me up and provided an immeasurable amount of healing for me. However, nothing will ever completely fill the void I still feel to this day without Dale Earnhardt.
The one thing I will not do, though, is watch the tape I have of the 2001 Daytona 500. And anytime a replay of Dale's wreck at Daytona is shown on TV, I turn my head.

Anyone who doesn't agree this is the biggest story of the decade either doesn't understand NASCAR racing or simply didn't like Dale Earnhardt. I lost my brother, my hero and my best friend on February 18, 2001. And all three (3) of them were Dale Earnhardt.
His memory and legacy must be kept alive.
