Martin Truex Jr. will start Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway from the pole as a result of turning a lap a 135.120 mph in qualifying on Friday afternoon.

Starting second in the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 will be Kurt Busch.

Jimmie Johnson, the points leader in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, will start third.

Mark Martin, who is second in the Chase with two races to go and is 73 behind Johnson, will start 10th. Martin won the spring race at PIR.

Jeff Gordon, third in points and 112 behind Johnson, qualified 14th.

Busch is fourth in points, 171 behind Johnson, the Hendrick Motorsports driver who has won three times at PIR.

The pole is the third of the year for Truex, who failed to make the Chase this season. His first pole of the season came at the season-opening Daytona 500.

Truex will be attempting to get his first victory of the season.
