Don – Thanks for the comment and the correction. I was going by news reports on the Isaac story since that was before I was covering NASCAR. It’s a fascinating and sometimes scary place.

I’m always hopeful that, sometime during the week preceding a Talladega race, at least someone will write a column on the curse. Much thanks! One small correction: While the story about Bobby Isaac is largely true, he wasn’t leading the race when he came in. The larger context is that, earlier in the race, a promising young driver from Lenior, NC, Larry Smith, was killed in a very tame looking wreck. Whether or not or to what degree Isaac was “spooked” is unclear. There are other examples of the curse, such as race cars being mysteriously damaged sometimes during the night before the race. Yep, Talladega is definitely a unique place – for whatever reason!
